Moodboarding :: Mod-western Eclectic No. 1

I get a lot of questions about my process, and also love seeing when other artists and designers share their process shots, so I wanted to take a moment to show you a little “behind the scenes” and share my creative process.

I’ve included a short time lapse video of me actually hand-painting a pattern, but first things first… everything starts with a mood board. Just like when I used to design spaces for clients, one of the first steps was always creating a mood board.

Speaking of mood boarding… can I get a quick hallelujah and an amen for Pinterest? For those of us who have been creating mood boards or vision boards for many years now, it makes me wonder how we ever survived without this amazing platform. Total. Game changer.

I used Pinterest to create this moodboard called “Mod-Western Eclectic No. 1” — you can see this entire Pinterest board with links to the images and more inspiration right here.

Below is a quick time lapse video of my “quick & dirty” process for sketching out a pattern by hand. Though I sometimes enjoy using apps on my iPad (such as procreate), I prefer the more hand painted look that can only be achieved with paints on canvas, and I more enjoy working with the paints, inks, oil pastels and charcoal, so I usually go “old school” when creating a pattern, and use the technology at had for formatting or for making slight color adjustments.

If you want to see more about my process and check out some of my favorite tools, just go to my instagram story highlights and watch the story under “process”.
